Women's Cross Country claims Chili Pepper title
Oct. 15, 2011
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The 17th-ranked Texas Women's Cross Country squad took home a first place finish at the 2011 Chili Pepper Cross Country Festival 6k run in Fayetteville, Ark. In a field of 35 schools, the Longhorns were able to edge out the host school Arkansas by four points, 85-89, to stay unbeaten this season. "Our major concern was Arkansas as they are ranked No. 11 nationally and took over our No. 1 ranking in the region," said head coach Steve Sisson. "We are happy to get a win on their home course as they are a tough team." All five runners who scored for UT were in the top 30 individually, led by Sara Sutherland who came in ninth with a time of 20:32.4. Close behind was fellow sophomore Marielle Hall who finished in 20:41.2 for 12th. Megan Siebert clocked a 20:59.8, crossing the finish line at the same time as a Utah runner for 18th overall. Senior Mia Behm came in 21st with a time of 21:05.4 and Laleh Mojtabaeezamani rounded out the top five Texas runners with a time of 21:19.0 for 27th place. Also running for the Longhorns were Julie Amthor, Jourdan Ellis, Anne Jones and Virginia Simon. Amthor ran the race in 21:37.6 for 39th overall. Ellis was 62nd (22:04.0), Jones was 76th (22:13.1) and Simon was 82nd (22:16.9). "This was a good meet for us to take some punches and see where we are at," said Sisson. "We have a lot of room for improvement and if we keep getting better should be ready to go for the Big 12 Championships." The Big 12 Championships are next up for Texas as they will head to College Station two weeks from today on Oct. 29. The race is scheduled to start at 11 a.m.
