Women's Cross Country claims Pac 12 Preview Elite Invitational title
Sept. 21, 2012 SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - The No. 27 Texas Women's Cross Country team earned a team victory at the Pac 12 Preview Elite Invitational on Friday evening with three Longhorns finishing in the top 10. The 5K race was held at Robinson's Ranch Golf Course in Santa Clarita, Calif. "It's always good to win the first big meet of the season," Texas coach Steve Sisson said. "We had some really solid performances and then have some places we need to focus on to get better. That's why we run these early-season races, to figure out where we need to improve and also identify some of our strengths." UT was led by junior Sara Sutherland, who crossed the finish line third overall with a time of 17:12. Fellow juniors Marielle Hall (fourth, 17:34) and Megan Siebert (eighth, 17:54) also finished in the top 10 to guide Texas to a meet-low 56 team points. Seniors Laleh Mojtabaeezamani (18:23) and Anne Jones (18:25) rounded out the scoring for the Longhorns, finishing 20th and 21st, respectively. Also running for Texas were junior Jessica Harper (29th, 18:46), sophomore Jenna Read (34th, 19:03), redshirt freshman Marissa Lee (44th, 19:25), redshirt freshman Alaina Perez (51st, 19:36), junior Brittany Marches (53rd, 19:39), freshman Kendall Howen (58th, 20:01) and freshman Claire Andrews (61st, 20:20).
Texas' 56 points edged UC Davis and Northern Arizona, who tied for second in the team competition with 73 points each. Meet host UCLA was fourth with 97 points, while Clemson (108 points), Cal Poly (117 points) and Long Beach State (144 points) were fifth, sixth and seventh. Texas will next compete on Saturday, Sept. 29, in the second annual Grass Routes Grand Prix in Austin. The women's collegiate race is scheduled for 10:35 a.m. Central.
