June 12, 2010

EUGENE, Ore. -- The University of Texas Women's Track and Field team concluded the 2010 NCAA Track and Field Championships with a seventh-place finish in the 4x400m relay at Hayward Field in front of 12,812 fans, the largest NCAA final day crowd in 26 years.

The Longhorn quartet of freshman Alicia Peterson, sophomore Stacey-Ann Smith, junior Chantel Malone and sophomore Angele Cooper clocked a 3:34.22 to pick up two points for the Horns. The relay, which won the event in 2009, placed for the second-straight year marking the first time they've scored in back-to-back years since 2004 and 2005.

All four members of the relay also earned All-America honors. Texas has placed in the mile relay 20 times in the 28 years it has competed in the NCAA outdoor Championships

Malone also competed in the long jump placing 13th with a leap of 20-2.5 (6.16m).

Texas A&M won the 2010 team title with 72 points followed by Oregon (57 points), Florida (40 points), Penn State (34 points) and Virginia Tech with 33 points. Texas finished tied for 51st with three points.
