Three Longhorns and a relay secure trip to NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
May 29, 2010 AUSTIN, Texas -- Sophomores Victoria Lucas and Mia Behm, junior Chantel Malone and the Longhorns 4x400m all punched their tickets to the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on the final day of the West Preliminary meet Saturday afternoon out at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Over the three-day meet, a total of seven athletes qualified for eight events along with the relay. Lucas earned her first national championship high jump appearance with a clearance of 5-11.25, tying with five other competitors for first place. The height was also the 2010 Big 12 Outdoor champions highest cleared as a Longhorn. Lucas attempted on all five heights of the competition and cleared each on her first attempt. Malone qualified for her second individual event with a ninth-place showing in the triple jump. The junior posted a season-best mark of42-9.75 (13.05m) on her first attempt to advance. Malone also earned a spot in the long jump finals Friday night with a personal-best leap of 21-6.25 (6.56m). Behm earned a berth to her first national championship by finishing second in her heat of the 5,000m with a time of 16:35.96. The sophomore, who was seeded ninth in the west region entering the race, will be looking to become the first Longhorn to score in the 5K at the national outdoor meet since 1988. Texas' 4x400m relay of freshman Alicia Peterson, sophomores Stacey-Ann Smith and Angele Cooper and Malone finished second in their heat in a season-best 3:32.03, to automatically qualify for the national championship. The Horns, who won the 2009 mile-relay national title, posted the fourth-fastest time overall. The seven individuals and the relay are the Longhorns most qualifiers since 2005 when they also sent seven and a relay. Along with Malone, Lucas and Behm, Jordyn Brown (shot put), Cooper (400m hurdles), Smith (400m) and Okwukwe Okolie (discus) will make the trip to Eugene. The 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held at Hayward Field, June 9-12, on the campus of the University of Oregon.
