Sutherland leads Longhorns on day one of Penn Relays

April 28, 2011

PHILADELPHIA - University of Texas freshman Sara Sutherland posted the second-fastest 5,000m time by a Longhorn since 1988 to highlight action for the Longhorns on day one of the 2011 Penn Relays. Also on Thursday, Texas saw its 4x400m relay qualify for Saturday's final.

Sutherland turned in a strong 5,000m showing with her third-place finish in a personal-best time of 16:09.52. The freshman shaved almost a full minute off of her previous PR (17:02.06) for the fastest time by a Longhorn this season. In addition, she is just the fifth Longhorn to post a time faster than 16:10.00 in Texas history and joins teammate Mia Behm as the only two to accomplish the feat since 1988.

The 4x400m of Briana Nelson, Danielle Dowie, Stacey-Ann Smith and Angele Cooper posted the second-fastest time (3:35.73) during the preliminary heats to advance to Saturday's final.

The Longhorns' distance medley relay of Julie Amthor, Kendra Chambers, Marielle Hall and Betzy Jimenez finished 11th in 11:20.93, the eighth-best time in Texas history and the best by a Horn squad since 2008.

In the field events, senior Chantel Malone finished fourth in the long jump with her leap of 20-1 (6.12m) while freshman A'Lexus Brannon recorded a jump of 18-11.25 (5.77m) for ninth. Sophomore IJ Ubabuike posted her third-straight shot put mark over 50 feet with her toss of 50-0.75 (15.26m) for seventh.

Junior Laleh Mojtabaeezamani placed eighth in the 10,000m with a personal-best time of 35:25.81, while senior Allison Mendez clocked a 36:18.12 for 18th.

Competition continues for the Longhorns on Friday with athletes competing in the 4x1,500m championship, 4x200m prelims, 100m hurdles prelims, 100m prelims, Sprint Medley Championship, discus and high jump.
