Women's Track and Field places seventh at 2010 Big 12 Indoor Championships

AMES, Iowa -- The University of Texas Women's Track and Field team finished the 2010 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships in seventh place with a total of 58 points. The Longhorns picked up seven NCAA provisional marks and set four PR's on the second day of the two-day meet held at Lied Recreation Center on the campus of Iowa State.

Texas A&M claimed the team title with 130.5 points. Texas Tech was second with 115, followed by Nebraska (96), Oklahoma (65), Kansas (63.5) and Iowa State (59).

The Longhorns earned 15 points in the 400m finals led by sophomore Angele Cooper's second-place finish. Cooper clocked a personal-best and NCAA provisional time of 52.97 for eight points. Sophomore Stacey-Ann Smith also PR'd and picked up a provisional mark after crossing the line in 53.87 for second in her heat. Freshman Alicia Peterson rounded out the Horn trio in the 400m by placing seventh in 55.04.

Cooper returned to the track for the 200m finals and earned her second PR and provisional qualifier of the day with a time of 23.72 for sixth place.

In the high jump, sophomore Victoria Lucas placed third with a season-best and NCAA provisional height of 5-10.5 (1.79m). The Longhorns mile-relay (Judy Nwosu, Smith, Chantel Malone, Cooper) also placed third with a provisional mark of 3:39.13.

Just a day after setting a Big 12 Championship meet record in the long jump for her first Big 12 title, Malone posted a fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 42-4.25 (12.91m). Malone and Kansas freshman Andrea Geubelle both recorded jumps of 12.91m but Geubelle had the next best mark at 12.83m to take third place.

Also scoring for the Longhorns were senior Jordyn Brown who earned a fourth-place finish in the shot put with her throw of 51-5 (15.67m), sophomore Judy Nwosu who placed sixth in the 600 yard (1:22.56) and redshirt junior Betzy Jimenez who placed seventh in the mile (4:45.04). Jimenez's mile was the fifth-fastest in UT indoor history.

The Longhorns head to Last Chance meets next weekend (March 5-6) before heading to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships from Friday-Saturday, March 12-13.
