Jan. 28, 2012
HOUSTON, Texas - The Women's Track & Field team was led by victories in the 400m, long jump and high jump Saturday as they closed out the two-day Houston Invitational. "We have transitioned from having a good meet the last two weeks to a very good meet this weekend," said head coach Beverly Kearney. "We had some very competitive season bests." Alicia Peterson, a junior from Sherman, Texas, ran a 55.39 to take first place in the 400m as Texas won the event for the second straight week. Right behind Peterson was Danielle Dowie in second place with a time of 55.99. Sophomore A'Lexus Brannon picked up her first victory of the season in the long jump with the top jump of the day at 6.11m (20-00.50). In the high jump, Texas snatched the top three places. Victoria Lucas reached the highest mark for the win, clearing 1.79m (5-10.50), while Beverly Owoyele and Alicia Peterson each hit 1.74m (5-08.50) to take second and third respectively.. The throwers also had a really good day in the shot put with three in the top 10. Amanda Van Dyke was the highest finisher with a second-place throw of 15.91m (52-02.50). Okwukwe Okolie took third overall with a throw of 14.52m (47-07.75) and Akua Sencherey finished 10th.
"We did a good job of building off each other's energy in the field events with all of them going on at the same time," said Kearney. "We were ignited by Morgan Snow's personal records in two events and that really set us off the rest of the meet." Snow had the second best time in the 60m hurdles during the prelims and ended up finished third in the finals with a better time of 8.34. She was also seventh in the 60m dash. In the 60m dash, Allison Peter ran a 7.40 in the finals, which was the third best time of the race. Texas will be off next weekend as they prepare for their next meet Feb. 10-11 when the squad will split and compete at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. and the Washington Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash.
