Malone posts second best long jump in school history at Razorback Invitational

Jan. 28, 2011

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Texas senior Chantel Malone recorded the second-best long jump in Texas indoor history Friday night after posting a mark of 21-10 (6.65m) for first place at the Razorback Invitational. Malone's mark is the new nation-leader and automatically qualifies her for the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championships. Malone was just shy of Marshevet Hooker's school record mark of 22-0.25 (6.71m) set in 2006.

Freshman Shanay Briscoe led a trio of Horns in the high jump with a season-best clearance of 5-10.75 (1.80m) for third place. Junior Victoria Lucas placed fifth with a mark of 5-8.75 (1.75m) followed by sophomore Alicia Peterson who cleared 5-7 (1.70m) to tie for seventh.

In the 200m, freshman Briana Nelson posted a season-best 24.13 for 12th place while freshman Christy Udoh qualified for the 60m semifinals with a 7.62. Junior Laleh Mojtabaeezamani shaved 20 seconds off her 5,000m personal best to finish fifth in 17:10.57.

A group of Longhorns also competed at the Houston Invite Friday night. Junior Beverly Owoyele placed second in the pentathlon with a personal-best 3,571 points. Owoyele set PR's in the high jump (5-7.75, 1.72m) and 60m hurdles (9.06) en route to her second place finish. Three Horns also set personal-bests in the weight throw led by junior Okwukwe Okolie who placed 15th with a mark of 47-6.50 (14.49m). Sophomore IJ Ubabuike placed 19th with a 45-10.0 (13.97m) while sophomore Akua Sencherey posted a 45-6.25 (13.87m) for 21st.

The Longhorns continue action at both meets on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. Central in Houston.

POST MEET QUOTES
Head Coach Beverly Kearney
On the overall meet: I thought we had a pretty good meet. We had some decent performances and some great performances. I was really pleased with the 200m race and we feel like we're going to run really well tomorrow.

On Chantel Malone: Well Chantel only took three jumps instead of five. The good thing about it is that she has matured to the point where she can make adjustments and she believes she can. Before she would have two good first jumps then kind of start going downward. This time she stayed focused and kept improving to where she executed everything on time. That takes a lot of maturity and we're excited about what she can continue to do this season.
