Tennis programs on top of regional rankings
AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas men's and women's tennis teams have a combined nine singles players and six doubles teams listed in the Fall Regional Rankings, as announced by the ITA last week.
Junior Roger Gubser (Laredo, Texas) led the way for the men with a No. 4 ranking after posting a 14-4 record during the fall, which included a title win at the Texas Fall Invitational and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the ITA South Central Regional Championships. With a 9-2 performance, freshman Travis Helgeson (Overland Park, Kan.) received a No. 8 regional ranking. Helgeson had a strong collegiate debut by, most notably, reaching the semifinals of the Texas Fall Invitational and the quarterfinals of the ITA South Central Regional Championships. Junior Callum Beale (Adelaide, Australia) rounded out the top 10 in singles after posting a 10-4 fall record. Beale advanced to the quarterfinals of the Texas Fall Invitational and the semifinals of the ITA South Central Regional Championships.
Also making an appearance in the regional rankings were freshman Milan Mihailovic (Nis, Serbia) and junior Hubert Chodkiewicz (Corpus Christi, Texas). Mihailovic posted a 10-2 record this fall and received a No. 19 regional rank, while Chodkiewicz came in at No. 28 with a record of 6-3.
In doubles, the tandems of Beale and Helgeson and Gubser and Chodkiewicz received rankings of No. 7 and No. 9, respectively. Beale and Helgeson finished the fall with a 6-1 record and the Texas Fall Invitational doubles title. Gubser and Chodkiewicz teamed to post a 10-4 record and also earned an appearance in the qualifying round of 16 at the ITA All-American Championships. In addition, the duo of freshman Luis Diaz Barriga Ibanez (Cordoba, Mexico) and sophomore Garrett Snyder (Newport Beach, Calif.) recorded a 6-2 mark in the fall for a No.13 regional rank.
Texas was the only school to place three singles players in the top 10 and three doubles teams in the top 15 of the Men's South Central region, which includes Big 12 opponents Texas A&M, Tech, and Baylor - the 2004 National Champion.
On the women's side, juniors Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.), Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) and Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia), along with sophomore Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia), each recorded strong performances en route to Southwest region honors. Strohm was awarded a No. 3 regional ranking after posting a 7-5 mark and making an appearance in the finals of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, which qualified her for the ITA National Indoors. Dizdar and Ruckert rounded out the top 15 with ranks of Nos. 14 and 15, respectively. Dizdar finished the fall with a 6-6 record and made an appearance in the quarterfinals of the Baylor Invitational, while Ruckert compiled a 3-4 mark, which included an appearance in the singles consolation final of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships. With a 7-5 record and a second place finish at the Fall Desert Collegiate, Marovic was awarded a regional rank of No. 21.
After posting identical 3-2 records in the fall and making appearances in the quarterfinals of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, the doubles tandems of Ruckert and Strohm and Dizdar and sophomore Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.), received regional ranks of No. 5 and No. 6, respectively. Receiving a rank of No. 12 was the duo of junior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and freshman Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas), who posted a 4-2 mark this fall.
The men's team opens its spring season on Jan. 21, when it travels to Houston, Texas, for the Rice Invitational. The women will travel to New Orleans, La., on Jan. 29 to begin their dual match season against Tulane.
