PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- Texas completed its stint at the Desert Classic on Sunday, Nov. 5 with several key victories to its credit as the Longhorns closed out the fall tournament season.
Junior Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) collected a pair of breakthrough singles victories, defeating 67th-ranked Ashley Joelson of UCLA by a 6-4, 6-4 count and Baylor's 73rd-ranked Klara Zrustova by a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-3) margin.
Freshman Sarah Lancaster (San Antonio, Texas) scored her biggest collegiate victory to date, handily defeating Southern California's 23rd-ranked Dianne Matias, 6-2, 6-0. Senior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) also dealt Joelson a singles defeat, winning by a 6-4, 6-4 margin.
Freshman Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) and Dizdar teamed up to win the doubles consolation bracket, defeating Baylor's Zuzana Chmelarova and Zuzana Zemenova, 9-8 (3).
Texas resumes tournament play in January at the National College Tennis Classic before beginning dual-match play on Jan. 26, 2007 at Iowa State.
