Women's Tennis preview: ITA Southwest Regional Championships

AUSTIN, Texas -- After a two-week layoff, the University of Texas women's tennis team returns to action on Friday for the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Southwest Regional Championships at the Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station. The tournament runs Friday through Tuesday, Oct. 25 at Texas A&M.

UT freshman Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) kicks off tournament play on Friday morning in the singles qualifying round. Milic will take on North Texas' Aziza Aba Butain at 8:30 CDT before three Texas doubles pairs hit the courts in the afternoon.

At 3 p.m. CDT, Texas junior Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) and sophomore Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) will team up to face Carmen Aberauboeru and Erika Iriarte of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, while seniors Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) and Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) take on Medeja Egic and Kimberly Patenaude of Rice. At 4 p.m. CDT, senior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and junior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) will meet Rice's Christine Dao and Melissa Kavanagh Patel.

The Longhorns fared well at the 2004 ITA Southwest Regional Championships but fell just shy of singles and doubles titles. Strohm advanced to the singles final, where she suffered a three-set defeat to TCU's Helena Besovic. Two Texas doubles pairs were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
