Women's Tennis completes first day at ITA Southwest Regional Championships
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Freshman Erin Keys (Austin, Texas) made an impressive collegiate debut as she won her first two qualifying matches at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships on Friday, Oct. 15 at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Keys defeated Katherine Barto of Texas-Pan American in first round action, 6-2, 6-2. She then faced North Texas' Katherine Harris in the second round and posted a, 6-2, 7-5, victory en route to an appearance in Saturday's qualifying round of 16 where she will face Camila Caliari of LSU. In main draw doubles, three Texas tandems took to the courts in Friday's first round action. Sophomores Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) defeated Tracie Chong and Dominique Karar of Rice, 8-2. The win advanced Dizdar and Olson to the second round where they will meet Zuzana Krchnakova and Klara Zrustova of Baylor. Junior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and freshman Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) posted an 8-3 victory over Amanda Brahim and Veronica Nicholls of TAMU-CC and will face the No. 39-ranked Texas A&M duo of Helga Vieira and Lauren Walker in the second round. Keys and junior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) lost their first round match, 8-5, to Maria Braniecka and Allison Leuszler of SMU. The loss moved Marovic and Keys to the doubles consolation bracket where they will meet Lata Assudani and Emma McDougall of Sam Houston State. Qualifying and main draw singles and doubles action at the Wilson/ITA Southwest Regional Championships will resume on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 9:00 a.m. (CST).
