LOS ANGELES -- Members of the University of Texas women's tennis team collected a pair of victories Saturday, but the wins were not enough to stave off elimination Saturday in the ITA All-American Championships pre-qualifying round at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Junior Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) opened pre-qualifying play with a 6-4, 6-3 round-of-64 win over Nebraska's Milena Schulz-Gartner. However, UCLA's Ashley Joelson ended Olson's run in the round of 32 with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Sophomore Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) experienced a similar fate in Saturday's pre-qualifying round after opening play with a 6-2, 7-5 win over New Mexico State's Isabelle Mignot. Georgia Tech's Kelly Anderson dealt Zauft a 7-6 (2), 6-4 defeat, ending Zauft's chances of advancing any further.
Utah's Elizabeth Ferris eliminated UT freshman Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) in the opening round by way of a 6-4, 6-4 win. Pepperdine's Merve Asimgil and Jelena Jovic eliminated Zauft and senior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) from the doubles draw with an 8-2 victory.
Texas seniors Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) and Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) will begin singles play in the qualifying round on Tuesday, Oct. 4. Milic will team with Strohm in doubles play, as will junior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) with Olson.
