Women's Tennis preview: ITA All-American Championships

WHAT: Texas continues fall tournament play at the ITA All-American Championships, one of three individual national championship events on the 2009-10 schedule. WHEN: Saturday, Oct. 3 through Sunday, Oct. 11 WHERE: Los Angeles Tennis Center – Los Angeles, Calif. (Oct. 3-4 only); Riviera Tennis Club, Pacific Palisades, Calif. (Oct. 6-11) WHO: Senior Vanja Corovic is slated to play in the qualifying singles draw, while junior Amanda Craddock and sophomore Krista Damico are set to play in the qualifying doubles draw. Corovic and senior Stephanie Davison will compete in the pre-qualifying doubles draw, though they are the first alternates for the qualifying doubles draw. Damico will be joined by juniors Caroline Larsson and Maggie Mello and freshman Aeriel Ellis in the pre-qualifying singles draw, and they will open competition on Saturday, Oct. 3. LAST TIME OUT: Texas opened the 2009-10 season last weekend by winning three singles draws at the UNLV Fall Invitational in Las Vegas and three more at the Rice Invitational in Houston. THE 2009-10 LONGHORNS: Under fifth-year head coach Patty Fendick-McCain, the Longhorns return all six singles starters and five of six doubles starters from the 2009 squad that reached the finals at the Big 12 Championships and the round of 32 at the NCAA Championships.
Senior Vanja Corovic returns after earning All-Big 12 singles honors in each of her three seasons in Austin. Senior Sarah Lancaster posted a 19-3 dual-match record last season and went unbeaten in conference play. Texas welcomes one newcomer, freshman Aeriel Ellis (Hayward, Calif.). |
