Texas Ex Uhlirova reaches U.S. Open doubles semifinals
FLUSHING, N.Y. -- Former University of Texas women's tennis standout Vladka Uhlirova has teamed with Agnes Szavay to reach the doubles semifinals of the 2007 U.S. Open at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Uhlirova (2000-02), a three-time All-Big 12 Conference singles performer at Texas, and Szavay punched their ticket to the semifinals with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Stephanie Foretz and Yaroslava Shvedova in Tuesday's quarterfinals. Uhlirova and Szavay will meet the fifth-seeded pair of Yung-Jan Chan and Chia-Jung Chuang in Thursday's semifinals. Uhlirova and Szavay opened the 64-team doubles draw with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Liga Dekmeijere and Julia Vakulenko. The pair advanced to the round of 16 with a 7-5, 7-5 triumph over Jasmin Woehr and Eleni Danilidou. The 14th-seeded duo moved on to the quarterfinals by upsetting the fourth-seeded tandem of Alicia Molik and Mara Santangelo, 7-5, 6-4.
