AUSTIN, Texas -- The 10th-ranked Texas women's tennis team defeated Southern University, 4-0, in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships on Friday afternoon at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center on The University of Texas campus.
The Longhorns improved to 21-5, while the Lady Jags ended their season at 12-11.
Texas opened the match with a pair of 8-0 wins at the top two spots in the doubles lineup. Junior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) and sophomore Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) defeated Sarah Johnson and Kelli Nabors at the second spot before the 28th-ranked duo of juniors Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) and Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) topped Francisca Osedumme and Tania Hicks at the first.
The Longhorns continued to dominate in singles as they allowed a combined four games in three matches. First off the courts was Marovic, ranked 92nd-nationally, who defeated Osedumme 6-0, 6-1 at the top of the lineup. Ruckert followed with a 6-1, 6-1 mark over Hicks at No. 3. The match was clinched by freshman Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas), who posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jennifer Floyd at the fourth position. With the match already decided, the second, fifth and sixth singles matches were not completed.
Texas will face Texas A&M (16-12) in second round action on Saturday, May 14. The Aggies advanced after blanking UNLV, 4-0, in Friday's other first round match. First serve for the NCAA Second Round is set for 11:30 a.m. at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The match was originally scheduled for 2 p.m., but was changed to avoid potential inclement weather in the Austin area on Saturday afternoon.
Texas Head Coach Jeff Moore
On the match:
"I was pleased with the team's focus today. In doubles, the emphasis was on making the points as short as possible by playing aggressively, and in singles, the players were looking to win a lot of first-strike points."
On facing Texas A&M in the second round:
"It is always a tough match against Texas A&M, if for no other reason than the rivalry. The key in the postseason is to perform at a high level and that is what the team prepares for all year. The focus will have to be on performance level and executing a winning game plan."
Southern University Head Coach Jeffrey Conyers
On the first-round loss to Texas:
"We really came out flat and just didn't recover. Texas jumped on us and didn't let up from start to finish. We've been to the NCAA Tournament for the past couple of years and now we need to focus on getting to the second round instead of just getting in to the Tournament."
