AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 11-seeded University of Texas women's tennis team will face Southern University in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin on Friday, May 13 at 2 p.m. (Central), UT officials announced Thursday. The Texas A&M women will square off in the other Friday first-round match against UNLV at 11 a.m.
The two winners will meet on Saturday in the round of 32 (second round) at 2 p.m. with Saturday's winner advancing to the NCAA Championships Round of 16. The NCAA Championship tourney is scheduled for Thursday-Sunday, May 19-22 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Stanford, the defending national champion, received the top overall seed in the women's bracket and stands 21-0 entering NCAA action. Florida (18-2), meanwhile, earned the second seed followed by Kentucky (23-5) and Vanderbilt (20-5).
The Longhorns are making their 23rd consecutive appearance at the NCAA Championships and hosting their sixth NCAA Regional in the past seven years. UT previously hosted the NCAA first and second-rounds from 1999-2002 and then again in 2004. Texas holds a 29-20 all-time record in NCAA Tournament play and has won the National Championship twice (1993 and 1995).
