Corovic earns NCAA singles bid
INDIANAPOLIS -- University of Texas freshman Vanja Corovic earned an at-large bid Wednesday to participate in the 64-player singles draw at the 2007 NCAA Tennis Championships in Athens, Ga. "Vanja has worked so hard all year," said UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain, "and it's great to see that hard work pay off with a NCAA selection." Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia), the 2007 Big 12 Freshman and Newcomer of the Year, vaulted to a career-high No. 24 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings. With a 24-11 overall singles record, she finished the conference season with a 10-1 league singles mark, including an 8-1 record at No. 1 singles. She was a unanimous selection to the All-Big 12 singles team and also made the All-Big 12 doubles team alongside UT sophomore Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario). Corovic becomes the first Texas freshman to earn a NCAA singles bid since Petra Dizdar in 2004 and the first NCAA singles participant for Texas since Dizdar in 2005. The NCAA singles draw will be released on May 21.
