DALLAS -- University of Texas junior Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) was named the Big 12 Women's Tennis Player of the Week for matches played from April 18-24, by the conference office on Monday, April 25. This is the first weekly award for Ruckert this season and the second of her career. Ruckert was previously recognized by the Big 12 on March 2, 2004.
Last week, Ruckert was 3-0 at No. 4 singles and surrendered a combined eight games to her three opponents as Texas defeated No. 31 Texas A&M, No. 58 Missouri and No. 75 Kansas State. With the wins, the junior improved to 16-5 in dual matches this season. Ruckert also teamed with junior Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) to post a 2-1 mark at No. 1 doubles and up her doubles record to 12-9.
The 10th-ranked Texas women's tennis team (17-5, 10-1 Big 12) returns to action on Friday, April 29 for the Big 12 Men's and Women's Tennis Championships held at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. As the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Texas receives a first-round bye and will face the winner of the Oklahoma/Kansas St. match. First serve is set for 3 p.m. Central.
