MANHATTAN, Kan. -- Texas’ 10th-ranked women’s tennis team closed out its regular season with a 7-0 win over No. 75 Kansas State at the Washburn Tennis Facility on Sunday afternoon. The Longhorns improve to 17-5 overall and 10-1 in conference action, while the Wildcats fall to 8-11 overall and 3-11 in league play. With the win, Texas is guaranteed the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championships.
“This was a successful day not only in terms of the score, but also the fact that everyone executed well from the beginning of their matches to the end,” Texas head coach Jeff Moore said. “This was a good performance to build on going into the Big 12 tournament.”
The Longhorns opened with doubles and first off the court was the tandem of sophomore Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and junior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia), who easily defeated Jessica Simosa and Tereza Prochazkova at the second spot, 8-0. The doubles point was then clinched by the 31st-ranked duo of juniors Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) and Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) after they posted an 8-5 mark over Maria Rosenberg and Tamar Kvaratskhelia at the top of the lineup. Junior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and freshman Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) recorded the doubles sweep with their 9-7 win over Fernanda Da Valle and Judith Diaz at No. 3.
Texas continued to control the dual in singles play where it gave up a combined 16 games to Kansas State. Sophomore Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) started things off with her 6-0, 6-2 win over Diaz at the sixth spot, and Zauft followed with a 6-2, 6-0 score over Da Valle at the fifth.
The match was clinched by Ruckert at No. 4 where she posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Prochazkova.
Marovic and Dizdar also collected straight set victories over their opponents at Nos. 2 and 1, respectively. Marovic, ranked No. 118 nationally, topped Kvaratskhelia 6-4, 6-1 and Dizdar, ranked 58th in the nation, blanked Rosenberg, 6-0, 6-0.
Closing out the match was No. 109-ranked Strohm, who needed a 6-4, 6-2 decision to defeat Simosa at No. 3.
The Texas women return to the courts on Friday, April 29 for the Big 12 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships held at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Check back with TexasSports.com for match times and pairings.
