Corovic earns second conference player of the week honor
IRVING, Texas -- University of Texas freshman Vanja Corovic was tabbed as the Big 12 Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week on Monday after helping the Longhorns clinch a share of the Big 12 regular season championship with victories over Texas A&M, Missouri and Kansas State. Corovic, who earned the same Big 12 honor on March 27, opened play last week by breaking a 3-3 tie to clinch Texas' thrilling 4-3 victory over No. 21 Texas A&M on Wednesday, April 18 in Austin. Corovic trailed 5-4 in the final set before rallying for a 7-5 4-6, 7-6 (4) over the Aggies' 24th-ranked Anna Lubinsky to notch the deciding point for the Longhorns. Corovic cruised to easy victories over the weekend at Missouri and Kansas State to end her initial season of conference play at 10-1. Corovic defeated Missouri's Chrissy Svetlic, 6-2, 6-0 on April 21 before knocking off Kansas State's Viviana Yrureta, 6-2, 6-1 on April 22. Corovic and the Longhorns begin play at the Big 12 Championships on Friday, April 27 at 3 p.m. Central at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo. Texas will play the winner of Thursday's first-round match between the tournament's seventh and tenth seeds.
