No. 5 Baylor stops No. 19 Women's Tennis, 4-3
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 19 Texas had two chances to put away No. 5 Baylor, but the Bears thwarted each Longhorn opportunity as they scored a 4-3 victory Wednesday evening at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. With Texas leading 3-2 and matches remaining at the first and third positions, UT sophomore Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) held a 6-5 third-set lead at the third slot as her opponent, Daniela Covello served 15-40.Covello mixed several well-placed backhands and volleys during the ensuing points to save the match points and force the match to a third-set tiebreaker.At five all, Zauft swatted a forehand beyond the baseline to give Covello a 6-5 lead.After the point, Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova nailed down a three-set win over UT senior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) at the first slot to even the match.Moments later, a Zauft shot sailed wide, giving Baylor the 4-3 win. Texas opened the match by taking the doubles point.Seniors Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) opened with an 8-3 win over Daniela Covello and Iva Mihaylova at the second slot.After Baylor won at the third position, UT's Marovic and Zauft teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1 over Zuzana Cerna and Klara Zrustova to clinch the doubles point. Baylor evened the match at one point apiece as Cerna defeated UT junior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) by a 6-3, 6-1 count at second singles.Texas junior Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) put the Longhorns back on top with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 over Zuzana Krchnakova. The Longhorns assumed a 3-1 lead as Baritot defeated Baylor's Mihaylova by a 7-6 (8), 6-1 count at fifth singles.The Bears pulled to within 3-2 as Zrustova topped UT's Strohm, 6-4, 7-6 (3), at the fourth slot. In its next match-up, Texas will take on Missouri.First serve is set for noon on Saturday, April 22 at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
