Women's Tennis falls to Texas A&M, 6-1
COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- No. 41 Texas A&M claimed the doubles point and five singles matches on its way to a 6-1 win over No. 15 Texas (11-9, 5-1) Thursday in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown at A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. UT junior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and freshman Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) scored Texas' lone doubles victory, defeating Anna Blagodarova and Seva Iwinski by an 8-5 count at the third position. Texas A&M (10-8, 6-0) collected victories at the first and second positions to take the doubles point. UT sophomore Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat A&M's Nicki Mechem in three sets, winning by a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 margin at the fourth slot. UT senior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) fought back from a one-set deficit against A&M's Tiffany Clifford to prolong her match and later forced a third-set tiebreak. Baritot fell just shy in the end, dropping the tiebreak by a 10-8 count. Senior Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) also rallied from one set down to force a third set, but Blagodarova claimed the victory by winning the third set, 6-2. A&M tallied straight-set singles victories at the first, second and sixth positions. Texas closes out the regular season with a five-match home stand beginning on Saturday, April 8 when UT meets Texas Tech.
