AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 15 Texas led from start to finish Saturday afternoon, as the Longhorns turned in a dominant 7-0 performance over Washington at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. UT improves to 11-8 on the season and now will close out the season with six Big 12 Conference opponents.
Texas collected the doubles point for a third consecutive match and extended its winning streak in doubles play to nine matches. Senior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) and sophomore Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) topped UW's 38th-ranked tandem of Dinka Hadzic and Victoria Brymer by an 8-3 margin at the first slot. Seniors Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) finished off Tara Simpson and Stephanie Svanfeldt by an 8-4 count at the No. 2 position before juniors Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) dispatched Melinda Wong and Allison Rainey by an 8-5 margin at the third slot.
The Longhorns took a 2-0 lead before singles play even began, as the Huskies defaulted the match at the sixth singles position. UT's Olson, who was scheduled to play at the sixth slot, did not get credit for a victory since a point must be played for a match to be considered official, although the Longhorns did get the point at that position.
Zauft extended the UT lead to 3-0, handily defeating UW's Svanfeldt by a 6-2, 6-1 count at the fourth singles position. Baritot breezed through the first set at No. 5 and outlasted Wong in a second-set tiebreak to win by a 6-0, 7-6 (6) count and clinch the Longhorns' victory.
Dizdar engaged in a lengthy match with Simpson at second singles but prevailed easily, winning 6-1, 6-2. Strohm rallied from a one-set deficit against UW's Brymer at the third position, taking the second set and the ensuing third-set super-tiebreaker to score her third consecutive victory.
Marovic took the first set against the Huskies' 98th-ranked Hadzic but dropped the second set, resulting in a third-set super-tiebreaker. Marovic followed Strohm's lead as she captured the third-set match tiebreak to win the match.
Texas returns to the courts on Thursday, April 6 to meet Texas A&M in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. The match is set for 6 p.m. CDT at A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center in College Station.
