Women's Tennis drops Texas Tech, 6-1

LUBBOCK, Texas -- No. 36 Texas (9-6, 6-0) rallied to win the doubles point and dominated singles play to claim a 6-1 victory over No. 69 Texas Tech (7-7, 0-4) Thursday afternoon at Texas Tech's McLeod Tennis Center.

"I was very proud of how tough our girls were today," said UT head coach Patty Fendick-McCain. "The conditions were tricky, and we fought through some adversity to play some tough tennis."

Texas Tech opened the doubles session by taking the first match at the second slot, but Texas picked up victories at the third and first positions to clinch the doubles point.

Freshmen Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) and Jane Pringle (Bedford, South Africa), who made her Longhorn debut in UT's 6-1 victory over Oklahoma on March 25, moved to 2-0 as a doubles tandem with an 8-2 win over Maria Jose Andres and Kerryn Potgieter at the third slot.

UT freshman Vanja Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and sophomore Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) held off Tech's Janet Durham and Samantha van der Drift, winning by an 8-5 count at first doubles to clinch the doubles point.

Texas took over from there, quickly collecting five singles wins to put away the Red Raiders. Senior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) dispatched the Red Raiders' Lakann Wagley in quick fashion, winning 6-1, 6-1 at second singles to give UT a 2-0 lead.

Senior Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) gave Texas a 3-0 lead after putting away Tech's Potgieter by a 6-3, 6-1 margin at fourth singles. UT's Milic clinched the match by defeating Tech's Brenna Jackson by a 6-0, 6-3 count at sixth singles.

UT freshman Sarah Lancaster (San Antonio, Texas) added a 6-3, 6-2 win at the fifth slot over Tech's Andres before Corovic improved her Big 12 record to 6-0 with a three-set defeat of the Red Raiders' van der Drift at first singles.

Texas Tech's Durham outlasted Texas' Davison in a third-set super-tiebreaker to register the lone point for the Red Raiders at third singles.

Texas will enjoy a weekend off before meeting 16th-ranked Baylor on Wednesday, April 4 in Waco. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. Central at the Baylor Tennis Center.
