No. 9 Women's Tennis defeats Oklahoma, 5-2
AUSTIN, Texas -- The ninth-ranked University of Texas women's tennis team defeated conference rival Oklahoma, 5-2, in the first match of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Longhorns swept doubles and collected four wins in singles to remain a perfect 5-0 in conference and improve to 11-4 overall. Oklahoma drops to 9-7 on the season and 2-4 in the Big 12. Texas dominated doubles play as it surrendered a combined three games to the Sooners. The 18th-ranked duo of juniors Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) and Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) blanked Jessica Braver and Irina Lykina, 8-0, at No. 1, while freshman Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) and sophomore Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) posted an 8-2 victory over Heather Saluri and Amanda Pratzel at No. 3. The sweep occurred at the second spot where sophomore Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and junior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) defeated Christi Baxley and Bethany Griffin, 8-1. First off the court in singles was Ruckert, who defeated Griffin 6-0, 6-0 at the third spot. Dizdar, ranked 95th nationally, followed with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Saluri at the top of the lineup. The match was clinched at No. 6 where Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) recorded a 6-1, 6-2 mark over Joi-Lee Beachler, improving her record to 3-1 when playing at this spot in the lineup. Marovic then collected the final point for Texas by defeating Jessica Braver 7-5, 6-1 at the fourth position. The Sooners' needed super tiebreakers to claim their two victories at Nos. 2 and 5. Strohm lost to Lykina 6-1, 3-6, (10-5) at the second spot and Zauft was defeated by Baxley 6-2, 4-6, (13-11) at the fifth. The Texas women's tennis team plays Colorado in the second match of Saturday's doubleheader at 5 p.m. Due to inclement weather in the Austin area, the match has been moved to San Antonio. #9 Texas 5, #55 Oklahoma 2 Doubles (Order of finish: 1, 3*, 2)
