Women's Tennis knocks off Colorado, 6-1
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 20 Texas (7-6, 4-0) dropped the doubles point but chalked up six, straight-set singles victories to top No. 20 Colorado (10-5, 5-2) by a 6-1 margin Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. "We worked hard after losing the doubles point, and the ladies were outstanding today in singles," said UT head coach Patty Fendick-McCain. "We'll get ready for another tough match tomorrow against Oklahoma." The Buffaloes won at the first and third doubles positions to claim the doubles point, though the Longhorns did score a victory at the second slot, as freshman Vanja Corovic and sophomore Marija Milic tallied an 8-5 win over Franziska Jendrian and Monica Milewski. Texas wasted little time taking the lead from the Buffaloes, picking up quick victories from freshman Sarah Lancaster and senior Petra Dizdar to secure the lead for good. Dizdar (Split, Croatia) dealt Camila Belassi a 6-0, 6-1 defeat at the second singles before Lancaster (San Antonio, Texas) scored a 6-1, 6-2 win at fourth singles over CU's Jendrian to seize the lead for the Longhorns. Freshman Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) followed suit with a 6-0, 6-4 win at third singles over Veera Nurmi to push the Longhorns' lead to 3-1. Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) clinched the match for Texas, defeating CU's Milewski, 6-4, 6-3 at the first position. Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) and senior Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) finished off the match for Texas. Milic defeated CU's Melisa Esposito by a 6-4, 6-2 count at sixth singles, and Olson knocked off Colorado's Gleisy Torres Torres, 6-1, 6-1. Texas returns to action once more this weekend when it meets Oklahoma on Sunday in Austin. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Central at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
