Women's Tennis preview: Colorado, Oklahoma
WHAT: No. 40 Texas (6-6, 3-0 Big 12) returns to Big 12 Conference play this weekend when it meets No. 20 Colorado (10-4, 5-1) and Oklahoma (5-6, 2-1). WHERE: Penick-Allison Tennis Center - Austin, Texas WHEN: Colorado on Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m. Central; Oklahoma on Sunday, March 25 at 1 p.m. LAST MEETINGS AGAINST COLORADO/OKLAHOMA: Texas defeated Colorado by a 6-1 count on Feb. 12, 2006 in Boulder, Colo.; UT handed Oklahoma a 6-1 defeat on March 25, 2006 in Norman, Okla. ABOUT TEXAS: Head coach Patty Fendick-McCain is in her second season with the Longhorns after leading UT to an 18-12 overall record and a spot in the Big 12 tournament finals in 2006. Texas' 2006 NCAA Tournament stint ended in the round of 32 with a loss at TCU. The Longhorns opened the season on Jan. 26 with a 7-0 victory over Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. Texas completed its successful road trip the next day with a 6-1 victory at Kansas. UT fought off challenges from Ole Miss and Arizona State in its first home matches of the season, defeating the Rebels by a 6-1 count and the Sun Devils by a 4-3 margin. Texas suffered a pair of road losses at the hands of No. 9 Miami (Fla.) and No. 3 Florida. UT nearly knocked off the Hurricanes but fell just short, dropping a 4-3 decision in Coral Gables, Fla. Florida handed Texas a 5-2 defeat on Saturday, Feb. 17 in Gainesville, Fla. Texas resumed Big 12 Conference play on Saturday, Feb. 24 and defeated Nebraska by a 7-0 margin at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The Longhorns suffered a 7-0 defeat to Notre Dame in on March 3 in South Bend, Ind. Texas hit the road for a spring break trip to California beginning on Sunday, March 11, when the Horns suffered a 5-2 loss to Stanford. UT fell victim to the California Golden Bears on Monday, March 12 by a 6-1 margin before suffering a 6-1 loss at No. USC on Wednesday, March 14. Texas returned home on Wednesday, March 21 and defeated Illinois, 7-0. Freshman Vanja Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) ranks 61st in the latest ITA singles rankings, and junior Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) came in at No. 115. Texas returns three letterwinners from the 2006 squad, including seniors Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.). Dizdar is a three-time All-Big 12 Conference selection who finished the 2006 season with a No. 104 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles ranking. Olson totaled an 18-8 dual-match record a season ago, and sophomore Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) has seen added playing time in 2007.
