Women's Tennis blanks Illinois, 7-0
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 40 Texas (6-6) swept the doubles session and the ensuing six singles matches on its way to a 7-0 victory over Illinois (3-7) Wednesday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
"It's great to get a win," said UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain. "The ladies just dominated out there today. Now, we'll get ready for some big conference matches."
Texas cruised through the doubles and singles sessions after the match was delayed 30 minutes due to rain. UT sophomore Marija Milic and freshman Vanja Corovic posted an 8-1 victory over Shivani Dave and Alejandra Meza Cuadra to open the doubles session at the second slot before seniors Petra Dizdar and Ristine Olson dealt Illinois' Megan Fudge and Emily Wang an 8-2 defeat at the first position to clinch the doubles point for the Longhorns.
Texas was the beneficiary of a couple of early retirements due to injuries at the sixth and fourth positions. Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) led 4-1 at No. 6 before Illinois' Wang retired, and Lancaster (San Antonio, Texas) held a 5-2 lead at No. 4 over Minor before she retired, as Texas took a 3-0 lead.
Olson (Missoula, Mont.) clinched the match for Texas with an easy 6-1, 6-1 win at the fifth slot over Meza Cuadra, and Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) knocked off Illinois' Dave by a 6-1, 6-4 count at third singles.
Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) held on for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Illinois' Fudge at first singles, and Dizdar (Split, Croatia) defeated Qu by a 6-1, 6-3 count at the second slot to seal the victory for Texas.
The Longhorns return to action on Saturday, March 24 when they host Colorado at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m. Central.
