KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 11 Texas surrendered the doubles point and four singles matches as No. 25 Tennessee topped the Longhorns by a 5-2 count Wednesday evening at the UT Varsity Courts in Knoxville. Texas falls to 8-6 on the season.
Tennessee (7-7) took a 1-0 lead by scoring an 8-0 victory at the second position and a tiebreak win at the first position. Texas junior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and freshman Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) scored the lone Longhorn doubles win, setting aside Stephanie Harris and Samantha Orlin by an 8-3 margin.
The 57th-ranked Dizdar evened the tally at one with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tennessee's Melissa Schaub at second singles. However, Tennessee claimed victories at the sixth, third and fourth singles positions to clinch the victory.
Senior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) provided the final point for the Longhorns, rallying to defeat Tennessee's Victoria Jones, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, at the first position. Senior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) nearly tacked on another point for Texas but was outlasted by Tennessee's Samantha Orlin in a second-set tiebreak and a third-set super-tiebreaker.
Texas ends its three-match road swing on Friday, March 17 at No. 11 Vanderbilt. First serve is set for 2:30 p.m. CST at VU's Currey Tennis Center in Nashville, Tenn.
