LOS ANGELES -- The 13th-ranked University of Texas women's tennis team (8-3) recorded its second consecutive loss of the season, losing to No. 12 UCLA, 6-1, on Tuesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
"As soon as the team can operate on all cylinders at once - in terms of energy level and competitiveness - they will do special things," head coach Jeff Moore said. "UCLA played well today, but our team did not give them a fight on all courts."
The Bruins (9-4) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after sweeping all doubles matches. The third-ranked duo of Daniela Bercek and Riza Zalameda defeated juniors Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) and Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.), ranked 28th nationally, at the No. 1 spot, 8-6. At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and junior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) lost their match 8-1, and junior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and freshman Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) were defeated 8-5 at the third spot.
In singles, the Bruins continued to dominate the Longhorns as they collected straight-set wins at Nos. 1-3. Dizdar was defeated 6-0, 6-2 at the top of the lineup, while Strohm lost 6-1, 6-1 at the second spot. UCLA clinched the match at the No. 3 position where Ruckert dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to Alex McGoodwin.
Sophomore Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) and Zauft were also defeated in their respective matches. Olson was defeated in three-sets 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the bottom of the lineup and Zauft lost in a super tiebreaker 6-4, 6-7 (3), 10-8 at No. 5.
Texas' lone singles victory was posted by Marovic who defeated Sarah Gregg at the fourth spot, 7-6 (6), 6-3. The win improves her record to 8-1 on the season.
The Texas women's tennis team returns to action on Wednesday, March 16 when it takes on No. 8 USC in Los Angeles.
