Women's Tennis preview: South Florida, Arizona State

WHAT: No. 33 Texas (2-3) resumes the 2011 dual-match season this weekend when it hosts No. 47 South Florida and No. 28 Arizona State. 

WHEN/WHERE: 
Friday, Feb. 25 - Texas vs. South Florida - Austin, Texas - 2 p.m. Central
Sunday, Feb. 27 - Texas vs. Arizona State - Austin, Texas - Noon Central

HORNS WEARING PINK:  Texas will sport pink shirts and shoes during Friday's match to support the fight against breast cancer. 

LAST TIME OUT: Texas ventured to southern California and took on Pepperdine and USC (Feb. 12-13).  UT suffered a 4-3 defeat to Pepperdine and a 6-1 loss to USC.  

LAST MEETING vs. SOUTH FLORIDA:  Texas defeated South Florida by a 5-2 count on March 1, 2009 in Austin. 

LAST MEETING vs. ARIZONA STATE:  Arizona State defeated Texas by a 4-3 count on Feb. 21, 2009 in Austin.

THE 2010-11 LONGHORNS:  Texas returns four regular singles starters from the 2009-10 squad that reached the finals of the Big 12 Championship and the round of 16 at the NCAA Championships.

The Horns are led by sophomore Aeriel Ellis, the 2010 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year and ITA Texas Region Rookie Player of the Year.  The Californian played in all three national championship events last season - the ITA All-American Championships, ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships and the NCAA Championships - on her way to totaling a 32-14 overall singles record.


 

 


Junior Krista Damico posted 28 singles wins during a standout sophomore campaign and registered a 15-8 mark in dual matches.  Senior Maggie Mello compiled a perfect 11-0 mark in conference play last season, and senior Caroline Larsson finished with a 15-4 record last season in dual matches.
