Women's Tennis opens conference play with victory at Iowa State
AMES, Iowa -- The 14th-ranked University of Texas Women's Tennis team opened conference play with a 7-0 blanking of Iowa State on Saturday, Feb. 13 at Ames Racquet and Fitness Club. The win improves Texas' season mark to 3-0 overall and the Longhorns are now 9-0 all-time against the Cyclones. Texas started the day by posting 8-3 victories at both No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to gain a 1-0 advantage. Juniors Katie Ruckert (Vienna, Va.) and Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) topped Jill Palen and Caitlin Loprinzi at the first spot, while sophomores Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) were victorious over Elizabeth Chermel and Danielle Uscinski at the second. The Longhorns swept the doubles matches as junior Kelly Baritot (Allison Park, Pa.) and freshman Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas) defeated Chrissy Derouin and Charlotte Ljungkrantz at the No. 3 position, 8-2. At the top two spots in singles, Dizdar handled Palen 6-1, 6-1 and Ruckert defeated Loprinzi 6-3, 6-1. Meanwhile, Zauft needed three sets to knock off Uscinski 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 at the third position. In the No. 4 slot, Olson posted a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Chermel. Holding down the bottom of the lineup were Marovic and Baritot who did not allow their opponents to win a single game as they defeated Derouin and Ljungkrantz, respectively, 6-0, 6-0. "The team played aggressively today, particularly when we were up in sets and this is something important to establish in the regular season," head coach Jeff Moore said. "We now have to prepare to play Kansas. Tomorrow's match will be indoors and they play really well in their home environment. It will be a challenge." Texas continues its weekend road trip on Sunday, Feb. 13 when it takes on Kansas at 10 a.m. (CT). Singles
