No. 20 Women's Tennis knocks off No. 22 Arizona State, 4-3
AUSTIN, Texas -- No. 20 Texas (4-0) captured the doubles point and held off a furious Arizona State rally to claim a 4-3 victory over the 22nd-ranked Sun Devils (4-1) Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
After Texas dropped its opening doubles match at the first position, the Longhorns rallied with victories at the second and third positions to seize the doubles point. First, UT freshman Vanja Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) and sophomore Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) dealt ASU's Rebecca Rankin and Nadia Abdala an 8-6 defeat at the third position. After finding themselves in a 3-0 hole early on in their match at second doubles, UT seniors Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) and Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.) rallied for a 9-7 victory over the Sun Devils' Sabrina Capannolo and Jessica Leitch at the third position to win the doubles point.
Corovic completed a spectacular weekend of singles play with her second victory in as many days. After winning in quick fashion on Friday, Corovic finished in less than an hour again on Saturday, defeating 99th-ranked Kady Pooler by a 6-3, 6-1 margin at the third position to give UT a 2-0 lead. Arizona State's Roxanne Clarke put the Sun Devils on the board with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sarah Lancaster (San Antonio, Texas) at the fourth position to slice the Texas lead to 2-1.
UT freshman Stephanie Davison (Port Orchard, Wash.) extended the Texas lead with an impressive 6-4, 6-0 win over Laila Abdala at the sixth slot, putting UT up by a 3-1 count. ASU's Rankin kept it close for the Sun Devils with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 win over Texas' Olson, but UT's Zauft held off Nadia Abdala in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 to clinch the Longhorns' victory. Texas' Dizdar nearly upset Arizona State's 90th-ranked Capannolo but fell in a third-set tiebreaker.
