Katie Ruckert's serving it up!: February 10

Hello, everyone! This is Katie Ruckert, a junior on the Texas women's tennis team. I am very excited about having the opportunity to write a journal which will keep you up-to-date on what's happening with the team, both on the court and off. I'll also fill you in on our matches and our travels throughout the 2005 season. Check back frequently to see what we've been up to!

Hello Longhorn Fans!

We had quite an exciting weekend as we beat Arizona State, 4-3, in our first home match of the year (on Feb. 5). Arizona State is currently ranked 30th in the nation, but their play is not reflective of their ranking. They are a very talented team and competed extremely well at all their positions.

We started the match by losing the doubles point, which always makes it that much more difficult to win. In singles, I won my match 6-0, 6-3 and then went to cheer on my teammates who were still playing. Petra (Dizdar) and Ristine (Olson) finished shortly after I did and they both played really well in their wins. The match ended up coming down to freshman Courtney Zauft's singles match and she clinched the victory for us with her third-set win. Courtney really stepped up to the plate and under extreme pressure prevailed. It was awesome to watch her play and clinch the victory for the team. We were pumped about the win because everyone competed at a high level and fought hard in every match.

One thing that is special about our team is that regardless of their own individual result in the match, everyone finds a way to contribute to the overall success of the team. Our confidence and trust in each other is growing every day.

We are now getting ready for our first conference matches of the season as we will be traveling to Iowa State and Kansas on Saturday and Sunday. Of course we will be back in time for Valentine's Day - everyone's favorite holiday!

I wanted to add that we had an unbelievable crowd at our match against ASU. It was probably the biggest crowd I have seen in my four years at Texas! It was awesome to feel so much support from the fans and to have so many people involved in the match. Most fans even stayed until the end. I just wanted to take this opportunity to say how much the team and I appreciate all of you coming out to see us. It really means a lot to us and it makes the match so much more exciting! To all of you who attended I want to say a big "Thank You" and to all those who have not yet had an opportunity to see us play, come out to our next home match on Saturday, Feb. 19 against Nebraska and Oklahoma State. I know you will enjoy it.

Hook 'Em Horns!
Katie
