Katie Ruckert's serving it up!: February 1

Hello, everyone! This is Katie Ruckert, a junior on the Texas women's tennis team. I am very excited about having the opportunity to write a journal which will keep you up-to-date on what's happening with the team, both on the court and off. I'll also fill you in on our matches and our travels throughout the 2005 season. Check back frequently to see what we've been up to!

Hello Longhorn Fans!

I hope everyone had a great weekend because the Texas women's tennis team certainly did. We opened the season with a win over Tulane, who were ranked No. 9 in the country, and to cap it off we beat them in New Orleans! I am really proud of my teammates because everyone contributed to this victory.

Unfortunately, I lost my singles match in a hard-fought three sets, but my partner Kendra Strohm and I won our doubles match decisively. We were both very pleased with our level of play in the doubles match. Collegiate tennis is a funny sport, because a player can lose a singles or doubles match, but the team can still win. This really reminds you that the focus should be on the team and not the individual.

After the match, we all went out to dinner in New Orleans and walked around the French Quarter (including Bourbon Street). Since Mardi Gras was about to start, it was, to say the least, a little crazy but an interesting experience nonetheless. In addition, all of my teammates and I got a lot of Mardi Gras beads to remember our trip. Mine are now hanging very tastefully in my apartment which I am sure my roommate just loves!

On a personal note, my father was able to fly down and watch the team compete which was an added bonus for me. It is always nice to hear a "Go Horns" from the stands at another school!

The win was exciting, but we are now focusing on our next match against Arizona State this Saturday at noon. It is our first home match of the season. ASU a talented group and I think this should be a good match. I hope to see as many fans from Frostbite as possible in the stands on Saturday. Have a great week everyone.

Hook 'em Horns!
Katie
