AUSTIN, Texas -- After suffering a season-opening defeat at the hands of No. 26 Arizona State last weekend, No. 3 Texas returns home this weekend for its home opener against No. 6 Northwestern. The Longhorns and Wildcats will do battle on Saturday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. CST at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. Admission is free for all UT regular season home matches.
Texas looks to regroup after dropping a tightly-contested match at Arizona State. The Sun Devils were forced to win nine games at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles positions to earn the doubles point and needed four, three-set victories to close out the Longhorns. UT junior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) tallied the lone Longhorns point when she defeated ASU's Roxanne Clarke in three sets at the No. 2 singles position.
Northwestern comes to Austin for its first dual match of the 2006 season. The Wildcats return 12th-ranked junior Alexis Prousis and 23rd-ranked Cristelle Grier, who also comprise the nation's eighth-ranked doubles tandem. Northwestern and Texas last met during the 2005 season, when the Wildcats scored a 5-2 victory in Evanston, Ill. NU also claimed the last meeting between the two teams in Austin, winning by a 4-3 count during the 2003 season. The Wildcats were eliminated by Clemson in the round of 16 at the 2005 NCAA Championships.
Saturday's NU-UT match serves as the first home match for UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain, who took over the Longhorns program in July of 2005 upon the retirement of coach Jeff Moore. Live scoring for all UT home matches is available at TexasSports.com.
