Women's Tennis preview: Arizona State

AUSTIN, Texas -- A new era in Texas Tennis begins Saturday, Jan. 21 in Tempe, Ariz., as UT coach Patty Fendick-McCain begins her first dual-match season at Texas with a date against No. 26 Arizona State. The match is set for a 1 p.m. CST start at ASU's Whiteman Tennis Center.

Fendick-McCain welcomes the return of six letterwinners from the 2005 squad that reached the NCAA championship match in Athens, Ga. Junior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia), who participated in the 2005 NCAA Singles Championships, returns along with senior Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.), who took part in the 2005 NCAA doubles competition with former Longhorn Katie Ruckert.

Senior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) returns after earning All-Big 12 singles honors in 2005. She co-owns a No. 31 national doubles ranking with Strohm, while Strohm comes in at No. 55 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) singles rankings. Arizona State reached the round of 32 at the 2005 NCAA Championships before being eliminated by Southern California. The Sun Devils feature two players in the ITA singles rankings in juniors Sabrina Capannolo and Rebecca Rankin, who each are tied for the No. 100 ranking.

Juniors Roxanne Clarke and Kady Pooler are ranked No. 27 in the doubles rankings, while Capannolo and Rankin own the No. 34 ranking.
