INDIAN WELLS, Calif. -- University of Texas junior Petra Dizdar (Split, Croatia) upset the fifth seed to highlight the first day of action for the Longhorns Friday at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
Dizdar eliminated Kentucky's Kim Coventry by a 6-3, 6-1 count to kick off the round of 32. However, Dizdar suffered a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 defeat in the round of 32 to UCLA's Ana Victoria Land.
UT senior Kendra Strohm (Tucson, Ariz.) also opened the tournament with a victory but could not stave off elimination in the round of 16. Strohm dealt Kentucky's Caroline Winebrenner a 6-2, 6-0 loss in the opening round before falling to Stanford's Jessica Nguyen by a 6-2, 6-3 margin in the round of 16.
Sophomore Courtney Zauft (San Antonio, Texas), junior Ristine Olson (Missoula, Mont.), freshman Marija Milic (Etobicoke, Ontario) and senior Mia Marovic (Split, Croatia) each were eliminated in the opening singles round.
Play continues Saturday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
