AUSTIN, Texas -- The third-ranked University of Texas women's tennis squad returns to tournament competition Friday when it takes part in the 27th annual National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Indian Wells, Calif. The event begins Friday at 10 a.m. CST and continues through Sunday afternoon.
Often referred to as "the Wimbledon of College Tennis," the National Collegiate Tennis Classic is the first major collegiate tournament of the 2006 season. The tournament features several elite college tennis programs, several of which present familiar competition to the Longhorns. Texas defeated two of the tourney participants - No. 2 Florida and No. 13 Kentucky - on its way to the 2005 NCAA championship match, where the Longhorns fell to Stanford, who also will play in Indian Wells.
No. 5 Southern California, No. 6 Northwestern and No. 12 UCLA also are slated to participate in the event. Several of the nation's top college players will join the aforementioned programs to round out the singles and doubles brackets.
College Sports Television (CSTV) will air a recap of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 5 p.m. CST.
