Women's Tennis ranks No. 17 in ITA preseason poll

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas ranks 17th in the preseason college tennis poll released Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Under sixth-year head coach Patty Fendick-McCain, the Longhorns return four of six singles starters from the 2010 squad that totaled a 19-6 record and reached the NCAA round of 16 for the second time in the last three seasons. Sophomore Aeriel Ellis, the 2010 Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year, ranks a career-best No. 8 in the ITA preseason singles rankings. The Californian has qualified for all five national championship events contested in her one-plus seasons of college tennis. Ellis and junior Krista Damico hold a No. 87 ITA preseason doubles ranking. Texas resumes play on Jan. 14 at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Calif. The Longhorns open the dual-match season on Jan. 22 when they host Rice.
