Women's Tennis trio advances at ITA Texas Regional Championships

WACO, Texas -- Senior Maggie Mello, top-seeded sophomore Aeriel Ellis and fifth-seeded junior Krista Damico earned berths in the round of 32 in the singles draw Friday on the opening day of the ITA Texas Regional Championships at the Baylor Tennis Center. Mello registered two wins on the day, while Ellis and Damico had earned first-round byes and needed only one win on the day to advance to the round of 32. Mello opened with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Sam Houston State's Anrinetta Botha before posting a 6-3, 6-2 win over SMU's Ashley Turpin in the round of 64. Mello will take on seventh-seeded Morgan Frank of Texas A&M in Saturday's round of 32. Ellis, the defending singles champion at the ITA Texas Regional Championships, opened with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Texas Tech's Kelsy Garland in the round of 64. Ellis will meet Houston's Giorgia Pozzan in Saturday's round of 32. Damico notched a 6-4, 6-2 win over UT-Arlington's Mikola Matovicova in her opening match. Damico is set to take on Texas State's Jessica Kahts in the round of 32. Texas also picked up opening-round singles wins from junior Julia Wiegand, senior Amanda Craddock and freshman Cierra Gaytan-Leach, though each player was eliminated in the ensuing round. Wiegand opened with a 6-3, 7-5 win over UTEP's Martina Trierweiler before falling to Sam Houston State's Sheridan Currie by a 6-3, 6-4 count in the round of 64. Craddock notched a 6-1, 6-2 win over UTSA's Micaela Silva but fell in a tight three-set match to Baylor's Karolina Filipiak in the following round, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Gaytan-Leach knocked off Baylor's Cristina Danaila by a 7-5, 6-2 count in round one and challenged Texas A&M's third-seeded Nazari Urbina in the next round before suffering a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 defeat.
