Corovic, Ellis advance to main singles draw at ITA All-American Championships
Oct. 7, 2009 LOS ANGELES -- Texas senior Vanja Corovic and freshman Aeriel Ellis recorded straight-set singles victories to secure a pair of berths in the main singles draw Wednesday on day five of the ITA All-American Championships, one of three national championship events on the college tennis calendar. Corovic (Belgrade, Serbia) scored her third win in two days as she dealt Pacific’s Jennifer Widjaja a 7-6 (3), 6-4 defeat to secure her main draw singles bid. Ellis (Hayward, Calif.), playing in only her second collegiate tournament, knocked off Sacramento State’s Karina Zheltova, 6-4, 6-4 to match Corovic with three consecutive singles wins and a main draw singles berth. “Vanja was composed throughout the match,” UT head coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. “She kept her focus and looked great. Aeriel was out there running beautifully, and she hit some of the most amazing shots. She just persisted and played some amazing tennis.” Ellis will meet USC's Danielle Lao in the opening round of the main singles draw while Corovic will take on Duke's Ellah Nze.
