Gaytan-Leach, Scott claim doubles title at Longhorn Invitational
Sept. 25, 2011
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas sophomore Cierra Gaytan-Leach and freshman Noel Scott emerged with an 8-5 victory over San Diego’s Laura Claus and Juliette Coupez to claim the doubles title Sunday in the Longhorn Invitational at UT’s Penick-Allison Tennis Center. “I’m really excited to see these two ladies win this event,” UT head coach Patty Fendick-McCain said. “Cierra and Noel had a nice showing last weekend at Duke and picked up a win over a nationally-ranked team. They came together again this weekend, and it was great to see them get the title.” In the singles finals, Gaytan-Leach took the first set off of San Diego’s Coupez, 6-4, but Coupez took the following two sets, 6-2, 6-3 to win the singles draw. “Cierra had a breakout weekend, defeated a nationally-ranked opponent (Texas Tech’s Liz Ullathorne),” Fendick-McCain said. “Her opponent hit some unbelievable shots to beat her today. But, it was nice to see Cierra be so tough and work through the match. She is extremely talented, and it’s great to see her hard work paying off.” Texas resumes fall tournament play on Saturday, Oct. 1 in the pre-qualifying rounds of the ITA All-American Championship in Los Angeles.
