Women's Tennis notches four singles wins on day one of Duke Invitational

CARY, N.C. -- The Texas quartet of seniors Caroline Larsson and Maggie Mello, junior Krista Damico and sophomore Aeriel Ellis swept its four singles matches Friday on day one of the Duke Invitational. The 15th-ranked Ellis opened competition in singles flight "B" with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Illinois' Breanne Smutko. Ellis will take on North Carolina's Shinann Featherstone in Saturday's quarterfinals. Texas' 44th-ranked Damico notched a 6-1, 6-4 win over Illinois' Allison Falkin to set up a quarterfinal meeting against Duke's Mary Clayton in singles flight "A". Larsson registered a 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 upset win over Purdue's 82nd-ranked Jennifer Rabot and will take on Wisconsin's Hannah Berner in Saturday's quarterfinals in singles flight "B". Likewise, Mello took down another ranked opponents, as she handed Princeton's 49th-ranked Hilary Bartlett. Mello is set to take on Illinois' Chelcie Abajian in the quarterfinals of singles flight "C". Damico and Ellis added an 8-6 doubles win over Duke's Elizabeth Plotkin and Nadine Fahoum.
