Ellis falls in round of 16 at NCAA Championships
May 27, 2011
STANFORD, Calif. - Texas sophomore Aeriel Ellis suffered a straight-sets defeat and was eliminated from the singles draw Friday afternoon at the NCAA Championships. Stanford's 43rd-ranked Stacey Tan dealt the 21st-ranked Ellis a 6-4, 7-6 (6) defeat in the round of 16 in the singles draw. Ellis finishes the season with a 29-15 overall singles record after nailing down All-America honors on Thursday with a win over Washington's fourth-seeded Denise Dy. Ellis became UT's first All-American since Janet Walker in 2000. Trailing 6-5 in the second set with a match point against her, Ellis managed to force a second-set tiebreaker. Ellis assumed a 5-1 lead in the tiebreaker before Tan evened the tiebreaker at five and took a 6-5 lead. Ellis saved one more match point, but a pair of Ellis errors gave Tan the victory.
