No. 16 Women's Tennis opens NCAA Championships with 4-0 win over Wichita State

May 14, 2010

NORMAN, Okla. -- No. 16 Texas (18-5) claimed the doubles point and added singles wins from junior Caroline Larsson, senior Vanja Corovic and sophomore Krista Damico in a 4-0 win over Wichita State (15-11) Friday in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA Championships.

Texas advances to Saturday's round-of-32 match in the Norman region and will take on either Arkansas or host Oklahoma at 2 p.m. Central.

Texas opened the match played indoors by taking the doubles point with victories at the first and third positions. Corovic and freshman Aeriel Ellis led off with an 8-4 win over Stephanie Dalmacio and Lutfiana Budiharto at the first slot. The Horns nailed down the doubles point at the third slot, where senior Sarah Lancaster and Larsson posted an 8-3 win over Lily Wakim and Delia Damaschin. The remaining match at second doubles was suspended.

UT quickly extended its lead to 2-0 when Larsson dealt Wakim a 6-0, 6-0 defeat at sixth singles. Corovic dropped the first set to Lenore Lazaroiu at third singles but took the next two sets, 6-1, 6-3 to stake Texas to a 3-0 lead.

The Longhorns clinched the team victory at second singles, where Damico finished off Dalmacio in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. The remaining matches were suspended.

POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Patty Fendick-McCain
On the win:
We started off well in the doubles. We've put in a lot of work on our doubles, and it was nice to see it pay off. Wichita State is a good team, and we knew that coming into the match. When they started to play really well in singles, we were able to push back. It was a great way to get us ready for tomorrow.

On the singles winners: Caroline Larsson was just on fire and had a great match. She got off of the court very quickly. Vanja Corovic had a slow start today, but she settled down and took care of business. Krista Damico played a fantastic first set. Her opponent played some fantastic tennis in the second set, but she was able to hold her off.
