No. 19 Arizona State edges Women's Tennis, 4-3

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas (2-4) collected singles victories from sophomores Amanda Craddock and Maggie Mello and junior Sarah Lancaster, but No. 19 Arizona State (5-1) outlasted the Longhorns by a 4-3 count Saturday afternoon at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
After a 30-minute rain delay, Texas put up a considerable fight in the doubles session, but Arizona State prevailed at the first and second positions to seize the doubles point. The Longhorns picked up a win from sophomores Amanda Craddock and Caroline Larsson at third doubles, where they dealt Ashlee Brown and Sianna Simmons an 8-6 defeat.
Craddock put Texas on the board at sixth singles with a 6-0, 6-3 defeat of Brown. ASU's Micaela Hein gave the Sun Devils a 2-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-2 win at third singles over UT junior Stephanie Davison. The Longhorns evened the match at two when Mello outlasted Laila Abdala at fourth singles, 7-6 (3), 1-6, 6-2.
Lancaster staked Texas to a 3-2 lead at fifth singles when she prevailed in three sets over Simmons, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. But, the Sun Devils rallied consecutive three-set victories at the first and second positions to close out the victory. Kelcy McKenna rallied for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win at the first slot over UT freshman Krista Damico, and Nadia Abdala dealt Larsson a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 loss at the second slot.
Texas resumes play on Friday, Feb. 27 against Florida International at UT's Penick-Allison Tennis Center. The match will get underway at 1:30 p.m. Central.
