Jan. 28, 2012
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – No. 15 Texas (2-1) dropped the doubles point but rallied with four singles victories to claim a 4-3 victory over No. 23 Alabama (0-1) Saturday in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Vanderbilt’s Currey Tennis Center (indoors). Texas trailed 1-0 following the doubles session, given that Alabama won two of three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. Texas senior Krista Damico evened the tally at one when she posted a 6-1, 6-2 win over the Crimson Tide’s 104th-ranked Courtney McLane at third singles. Alabama reclaimed the lead with a victory at fourth singles, but UT freshman Lina Padegimaite evened the score once more when she dealt Taylor Lindsey a 6-3, 6-1 defeat at fifth singles. Another Texas freshman, Noel Scott, staked Texas to a 3-2 lead on the strength of a 6-2, 6-4 win over Alabama’s 43rd-ranked Alexa Guarachi at second singles. The Tide evened the match at three with a win at first singles, setting the stage for the decisive match at sixth singles. Texas sophomore Elizabeth Begley held on for a 6-4, 6-2 win over Alabama’s Antonia Foehse to give the Longhorns the 4-3 victory. “It’s always tough to win the match when you lose the doubles point, but we got it done,” said UT head coach Patty Fendick-McCain. “Noel Scott got a huge win at No. 2 (singles) for us and played fantastic tennis. Krista Damico ran a clinic with her shot selection today. Lina Padegimaite put in a great effort at No. 5 singles, and Elizabeth Begley was ready for the challenge of finishing the match. She worked hard out there and definitely earned the win.”
Texas will meet host Vanderbilt on Sunday at 1 p.m. with the winner advancing to next month’s ITA National Team Indoor Championships. ITA Kick-Off Weekend |
