McGinnis, Bunting earn October Big 12 Swimming and Diving awards

AUSTIN, Texas -- Freshman Matthew McGinnnis (Raleigh, N.C.) garnered October Big 12 Male Swimmer of the Month and sophomore Ali Bunting (Grafton, Wis.) earned the league's Female Diver of the Month, the conference announced on Wednesday. The awards mark the first regular-season monthly conference accolade for each.

In his first two collegiate meets, McGinnis put together a string of nine consecutive wins individually and as a relay member to help guide Texas to a 178-130 dual-meet win over Indiana (10/8) and a first-place team finish at the Big 12 Relays (10/15). A product of Raleigh, N.C., McGinnis won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events with times of 1:35.25 and 4:31.58, respectively, in addition to swimming the lead-off leg of Texas' victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team in its win over Indiana. At the Big 12 Relays one week later, McGinnis and his relay teams posted top times in the 3 x 500-yard freestyle (14:11.53), 4 x 100-yard medley (3:23.59), 4 x 100 individual medley (3:31.20), 4 x 200-yard freestyle (6:59.05), 4 x 50-yard backstroke (1:33.02) and 200 x 400 x 200 individual medley (7:58.85) relays. McGinnis ended the month clocking an NCAA provisional standard in the 200-yard freestyle and posting three runner-up finishes in the 200- (1:38.18) and 500-yard (4:28.65) freestyles as well as the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:04.24) in the fifth-ranked Longhorns' 240.50-112.50 loss to No. 8 Southern California.

Bunting, a sophomore diver from Grafton, Wis., swept the diving events in the Longhorns' 192-107 dual-meet win over Kansas (10/14). On the one-meter springboard she posted 255.07 points and compiled 264.15 points on the three-meter. In the then sixth-ranked Texas upset of No. 4 Stanford (197-156) and the Longhorns win over Southern California (230-123), Bunting finished third in the on the three-meter (429.35) and fifth on the one-meter (221.45).

The University of Texas women's swimming and diving team will return to action on Friday-Saturday, Nov. 5-6, at the Boilermaker Invitational hosted by Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind. The Texas men's swimming and diving squad travels to Gainesville, Fla. For a dual meet against Florida on Friday, Nov. 12, at 1 p.m.
